After studying the marvelously baffling array of burger choices on offer I went with a cajun rubbed beef burger with an onion ring, BBQ sauce and American cheese (the name eludes me but I'm sure Atomic Burger disciples will know it by heart!) and it arrived in a magnificent mound of perfectly cooked beef dripping with tonnes of the above goodies. Don't be put off if, like me, the uber-American diner style isn't your thing - the food is worth it. It should all be about good food and value, and I believe the Atomic Burger management should reapply their focus on that. I go to a restaurant to enjoy food that has been prepared with care using good quality ingredients, not to be bombarded by paraphernalia and distractions whose impact wears off after a couple of visits. It is not a place for good quality food however. Filling the surroundings with 'attractions' may have appeal to some, but to me it all looks a bit tacky and cluttered!Ītomic Burger is an original concept - 'American style' burgers with amusing names, colourful menus and a mass of ornaments displayed all over the premises that can generate nostalgia amongst the older guests and amusement amongst children - the latter can be a relief to adults when taking kids out to a restaurant. Service was friendly, but overall the premises looked weary and in need of a good tidy up. A tired plastic beaker of insipid cranberry juice at £2.50 was also a disappointment. Six hours later and my stomach was still feeling very bloated and heavy. There was too much oil dripping out of the burger when I bit into it, and the chips looked and tasted like they had been reheated rather than freshly fried. The burger and chips I had for my lunch was OK but not great. Prices have gone up a bit, but we felt the quality has gone up more.

They had also helpfully labelled the boxes (depressingly polystyrene) so the gluten free and veggie burgers were easy to identify.Īnd finally we got plenty of vimto lollies with our excessively larger order, which went down well. The gluten-free bun was excellent, and possibly better on the size front than the normal buns. But a solution was not agreed upon, and going down the brioche bun route would be totally wrong. The bun has always been a bit contentious, and people felt it was better but not perfect, as it is a bit big and leads to a slightly wrong ratio. But if physics could be manipulated so they didn't go soggy that would, apparently, be better. Dirty fries were 'a bit soggy' - not surprising as they're topped with beef chilli, cheddar and jalapenos. The fries and sci fries were heartily approved of (delicious and crispy) as were the sweet potato fries. Our most dissatisfied diner felt her medium burger wasn't medium enough, but most people seemed happy. The Elvis eater was pleased that a lone request of a well-done burger was heeded. I'd heartily recommend a trio of guacamole, garlic mayo and fried onions on a BK. We also had some Boris Karloffs, and a Dead Elvis, which haven't changed. 'Two great things made greater than the sum of its parts.' The only criticisms were that more camembert might be good, and that bacon might be better than prosciutto (ie get a Molly Ringwald not an Elisabeth Shue). Camembert was held to be a good thing on a burger - like bacon and brie. We would have liked to be offered it, but we would all have declined.īurgerwise, the Molly Ringwald was very popular (camembert, crispy bacon and cranberry sauce), as was Elisabeth Shue (camembert, prosciutto and loads of sauces). Not many were eaten, and we felt it was a waste of packaging, coleslaw and someone's time to fill them up. We liked the extra bits of pickle, but we were all suspicious of the teeny plastic pot of coleslaw.

The veggie burger was good-flavoured and solid, and quite meaty in texture (a good thing). I think it was low blood sugar.Ĭonsensus on the actual food was that it has improved - variously that the buns, fries and burger patties are all better than before. The website is now a little more labyrinthine than it was, and I could only find the wrong phone number.

I got lost somewhere in the hinterland of the Atomic Pizza menu which thoroughly confused me. So I don't think Johnny Cash was replaced because of good taste.

Anyway, it's been replaced with (among other things) the Scott Pilgrim complete with jerk sauce. Maybe no-one ordered it on account of the unsavoury image it provoked. Am I the only person who liked them? That of course means the Johnny Cash burger is no more. Oh the hardship!
